Environmental health addresses all the physical, chemical and biological factors external to a person. It encompasses assessment and control of environmental factors that can potentially affect health. It is targeted towards preventing disease and creating health-supportive environments. Environmental issues are addressed by:
- Inspecting food establishments at least twice per year;
- Inspecting all daycares once per year;
- Inspecting all lodging facilities once per year;
- Inspecting sewage system installations;
- Performing sewage complaint investigations;
- Performing food borne disease outbreak investigations;

- Holding meetings with citizens to discuss sewage system options/food permits, etc.
Septic System Information:
If a home is built on 3 acres or less in Pike County, a sewage permit must be obtained for $90.00 from the Pike County Health Department, Home Care & Hospice. This ensures that the sewage system is installed correctly by a state registered sewage installer. If a home is built on more than 3 acres it is only exempt from a sewage permit. Therefore, a proper sewage system must still be installed. A sewage permit may still be obtained for a home built on more than 3 acres for the sewage system to be approved.
